South Africa has a very long history of mural art, beginning with the ancient San or Bushmen painted rock shelter. More recent are the various indigenous African traditions of decorating the homestead, and the wall painting practices of European settlers, who muralised the interior of their homes, such as the 18th century Uitkyk near Stellenbosch and the interior and sometimes exterior walls of churches.
