About the Book
First published in 1970, Competent to Counsel marked a turning point in Christian approaches to psychology and pastoral care. In it, Dr. Jay E. Adams presents nouthetic counseling from the Greek noutheteo, meaning to admonish or to instruct as a biblically grounded alternative to secular therapeutic models.
Rejecting the dominance of Freudian and humanistic psychologies, Adams proposes that true healing comes through Scripture-directed confrontation, confession, and change under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Counseling, in this view, becomes an act of pastoral care rooted in moral responsibility and the renewing power of the Word.
This method, at once theological and practical, has influenced pastors, lay counselors, and seminary programs worldwide. It established a distinct evangelical tradition of biblical counseling, now central to conservative Protestant practice.
