On auction is a complete set of Strachan and Co token coins - sixteen pieces being the four sets outlined below and all denominations - 2/-, 1/-, 6d and 3d
Set One: for a while the currency of East Griqualand issued c1874 and used for nearly sixty years across the region.
Set Two: the extremely rare Mountain Home set - issued for a single store owned by a relation of the Strachans. Less than 100 of most denomination survive today.
Set Three: the first set of "In Goods" issued in the late 1800s. Includes the extremely rare 1/- piece (less than 70 counted)
Set Four: the most recent set of "In Goods" issued in the early 1900s, the most common the S&Co pieces.
NOTE: This is one of the nicest sets of MH in existence, and the set four 6d and shilling are in near UNC condition.
The Strachan coins were only withdrawn from circulation in 1932 when privately issued coins were outlawed in South Africa.
You can read more about these tokens on my website at: Strachan and Co, South Africa's first indigenous coinage.
