Description: Composition Baby doll C1925. Ref. TO5
Make: Unknown, German in origin
Date: Estimated from the body around the early 1920s
History: Composition dolls (bodies as well as heads) were already made in Germany around the 1850s, using a combination of sawdust, glue and wood pulp. They were very well made and virtually unbreakable compared to the more fragile bisque heads. They were very popular with children as they could be played with, having no fear of breakage. I have not been able to identify the makers of this doll.
Description: Typical infant composition painted head with painted hair, open mouth and blue-grey sleep eyes on a composition body. The composition head is marked B 4 Germany 25. There is an obscure mark just above the letter B which may have been a crescent moon mark. Also take note of the composition body, marked Sch 35, the 35 indicating the length of the doll in cm. The only result I can find in trying to identify the origin of the doll is a German doll-maker by the name of Peter Scherf who did use Sch in some of his dolls.
Condition: The doll remains in relatively good condition throughout, some wear around the arms where they are attached to the body, some slight staining on the body (did someone try to paint it?) and the marks S.898 0/55 and 7/6(possibly the price in the 1920?).
Dimensions: The doll stands just over 35 cm in height.
