A Gold Special Award Medal from the Comrades Marathon Association. Comes encapsulated in a Comrades fitted maroon case dated 1989. Made at the South African Mint. I do not know how many of these medals exist but they are certainly rare.
The normal runner's gold medal (awarded to the top ten) is smaller and by 1989 was not made of gold but gold plated silver. The person who received this medal is a well known Natal runner and he certainly was entitled to the 1989 runner's gold medal. He wishes to remain anonymous; so do not ask me for his name. I will only tell the successful bidder who will receive a digital photograph of the person holding his medal.
Solid 22 ct gold. Proof struck. Diameter 32.4 mm. Mass 34 gm. Stamped on the back with the S.A.M hallmarks for 91.6% gold (22ct) and the date letter Q for 1990. Contains one Troy oz of fine gold - same as a Krugerrand.
The images of the medal have been taken in normal and reflected light. The reddish marks, seen in the reflected images, are not damage. They are called 'red spots' and arise in proof coins from the oxidisation of surface copper in the alloy. There is some damage to the outside of the case's lid.
