A photograph of Edwin Alfred Conroy (RH side) and D J de Villiers (a burger). Conroy was born in 1879 at Hanover, Northern Cape. Active in this area during the war, he later joined forces with Manie Martiz. By the end of the war there were no fewer than 71 murder charges pending against Conroy for the shooting of black prisoners. He was one of the few Boer War officers specifically excluded by Lord Roberts from the Vereeniging Clause that no rebels would be executed for war crimes.
