Constantine II

337 - 340 AD

NGC - XF

Roman Bronze Coin, Slabbed and Graded

A Constantine II Coin (337 to 340) AE3/4

Constantine II (316340 AD) was a Roman Emperor and the eldest son of Constantine the Great and Fausta. Born in Arles, he was proclaimed Caesar in 317 and educated in the imperial court, deeply influenced by his fathers Christian policies. Upon Constantine the Greats death in 337, the empire was divided among his three surviving sons: Constantine II, Constantius II, and Constans. Constantine II received control of Gaul, Britain, and Spain.
A staunch Christian, Constantine II supported Nicene Christianity and opposed Arianism, continuing his fathers efforts to consolidate the faith within the empire. However, tensions with his brothers over territorial disputes grew. In 340, Constantine II invaded Italy, ruled by Constans, seeking to assert dominance. His campaign ended in disaster when he was ambushed and killed near Aquileia.
Constantine IIs reign was brief and marked by internal conflict, highlighting the difficulties of a divided empire. His death left Constans and Constantius II to rule the Roman world.
