Cooke & Hulse Imari Porcelain Cup and Saucer c1840 ref. Aug 4B

Above is a beautiful example of a very rare Cooke and Hulse porcelain cup and saucer showing the 'Swagg Japan' pattern. Superbly decorated with a floral pattern, it has a decorative border and is enhanced with a lustre decoration. The saucer shows the rare, printed name-mark, incorporating the name of the pattern 'Swagg Japan'.
But, who were Cooke and Hulse?  In fact, very little is known about this company. They are recorded to have operated in Langton, Staffordshire, England from 1835 to 1855.  It appears that they specialized in high quality porcelain but all further records are lost.

Considering that the set is 175 odd years old it remains in very good condition with just some loss of lustre around the rim of the cup and saucer. The saucer, typical of its day, is large and deep, measuring 14.4cm in diameter and 2.8cm in height. The cup has a diameter of 9.3cm and a height of 5.4cm. Typically, the pattern was a transfer in a rich blue which resulted in a slight 'flow-blue' appearance. Glazing would have followed and then the pattern hand clobbered with the remaining orange, pink green and yellow-green colors and lustre. No further glazing was attempted as these colors and the lustre would not take the heat needed in glazing. This was known as an 'overglaze' decoration and was subject to wear.  Fortunately, this duo remain in very good condition as mentioned.
