T Cooke & Sons Antique Abney Level - Clinometer
T Cooke & Sons Antique Abney Level - Clinometer .
An antique Abney level by T Cooke & Sons. An all brass construction, finished mainly in black lacquer. The level is in excellent working order - the level is in fair cosmetic condition. The level is stamped 'T Cooke & Sons Ltd - London & York. I do not know the exact age of this instrument - possibly WW1 period or earlier - it almost certainly pre-dates 1922, as this was the year T Cooke & Sons merged with Troughton & Simms to become 'Cooke, Troughton & Simms'. Measures approx. 24cm in length x 8cm high. A paragraph from Opticalia Museum. The Abney level, invented in 1870 and called ‘The Miniature Theodolite’, consists of a 4 to 6-inch long rectangular telescope on the side of which is mounted a semicircle arc, graduated in degrees for measuring vertical angles, and a small spirit level. While viewing through the telescope at any angle a mirror reflection of the spirit bubble can be viewed through a small window to line up horizontal or determine an angle of inclination.
