Obverse

Instead of the Coat of Arms of South Africa, the obverse of the 1976 coins displays a portrait of Jacobus Johannes Fouché, South Africa's second president, facing right.

Below the neck truncation, the initials of the obverse designer: J.B. (for Jean Baptiste Buisset).

Around left and around right, the bilingual legend reads SOUTH AFRICA in English and SUID-AFRIKA in Afrikaans.

Around below, the date of issue · 1976 ·.

The reverse shows at its center two Cape sparrows (Passer melanurus) on a branch.

Below the bird on the right, in small letters the initials of the designer TS (for Tommy Sasseen).

Above, the numeral value ½ (half cent).
