BATTLEFIELD DISTILLERY
Distillers of Corngold whisky, the Northern Cape’s first single grain whisky fermented and distilled on site.
Battlefield Distillery produce quality, single grain whisky on the Northern Cape Battlefield route. The distillery is situated only 5km from the Rooilaagte (Graspan/Enslin) battlefield, where the said battle took place on 25th November 1899.
During this battle, that started early on the Saturday morning, Lord Methuen with 10,000 men attacked two Boer commandos totaling 2,500 men. The Boer commandos were under the control of Commandants De la Rey and Prinsloo. It was here that De La Rey started to take control of the battlefield and showed his great leadership abilities.
The British lost more than 210 men and the Boers lost none. The battle is remembered for the loss of Major John Plumbe that fought heroically on the front with his men. His pet Jack Russel stayed at his side until he was buried later that day; his grave can still be seen to this day.
Battlefield Distillery is the first distillery in the Northern Cape to ferment and distil a quality, single grain product. Our Corngold Whisky is aged with French oak, unblended and unflavoured.
