The origins of the name dogwood are dogged by confusion. The wood of the tree was once used for meat skewers and as a skewer was known as a 'dag', as in the modern word dagger, it is thought by some that this is the reason for its naming. However, as long ago as the 17th century, botanist John Parkinson said "We for the most part call it the dogge berry tree because the berries are not fit to be eaten or to be given to a dogge."
This tree grows 10 m (30 feet) high. With a distinctive tiered branching pattern and glossy, elliptic leaves often turning purple in autumn; flat clusters of small white flowers may be followed by small, blue-black berries.
