Cornwall to the Cape ~ The Story of the South African Delbridges
By Steve Herbert
This is the remarkable story of two young brothers, John and William Delbridge, who left Cornwall in the 1880s to secure a better life for themselves in South Africa. Stone masons by trade (as were their fathers and their fathers-fathers before them), they arrived in South Africa to chisel out a place for themselves. This they did with remarkable determination, vigour and an entrepreneurial talent second to none.
Their achievements here in South Africa are even more remarkable when their own family background is explored. Their father had died at 38, and their mother was illiterate. Steve Herbert's wife Judy was born Judith Delbridge.
