Aerial counting of wildlife on the Oppenheimer and De Beers Consolidated Mines Properties was first introduced four decades ago. This is the story of the many teams of pilots, counters, data capturers
 and helicopter support staff and their interaction with animals.

Pivotal to the annual wildlife census is Nicky Oppenheimer and his helicopter. His generosity has through the years seen wildlife counting develop from what was once a cumbersome and tedious process, to the current highly scientific and smoothly oiled operation.

The annual game count report that results from each aerial survey enables wildlife management to make informed decisions on current and future strategies.
