Clusters of white, pink, rose, red or purple flowers begin blooming in mid June and continue to September. New leaves are reddish bronze, changing to dark green. Fall colour is yellow to orange to light red. Very attractive trunk with smooth grey or light brown bark that flakes off to reveal dramatic, smooth pinkish inner bark. Excellent flowering tree for bonsai. Natural height is quite variable, may be pruned to stay small or permitted to grow up to 25' or more. Many cultivars commonly in cultivation but seed-grown plants are unique. Called "Crape Myrtle" because the flowers resemble crepe paper in texture. Why the spelling is "crape" instead of "crepe" is a mystery. Native to China.
