Crataegus laevigata is a deciduous shrub or small tree growing to 6 m by 6 m at a medium rate. It is a frost hardy species that is not fussy about the soil it grows in, even growing in heavy clay soils.

It can grow in full shade, semi-shade or no shade and prefers moist or wet soil but is also drought tolerant. The plant can tolerate strong winds and atmospheric pollution but does not do well where it receives spray from the ocean.
