Description of artwork | Original religious steel engraving by Albert Henry PAYNE (1812 - 1902), after the German romantic painter Hermann Anton STILKE (1803 - 1860). Albert Henry Payne was born in London on 14 December 1812 and died in Leipzig on 7 May 1902. He was a steel engraver, painter and illustrator. He was English, but lived in Leipzig from 1839 onward. Chine-collé is a special technique in printmaking, in which the image is transferred to a surface that is bonded to a heavier support in the printing process. One purpose is to allow the printmaker to print on a much more delicate surface, such as Japanese paper or linen, which pulls finer details off the plate. |
