As part of the FAQ: 

Yes, it can cut paper/cardstock, but it is not advisable to do so if you are going to cut foodstuffs as well.

If you intend to use it only for paper/cardstock, you will need a "DEEP CUTTING BLADE & DEEP CUTTING HOUSING " for the original Cricut/ Cricut Expression. You will also need the Expression sticky mats.

If you want to use it for cake decorating, "plastic icing" works the best, and even better if you add a little gum traganath or gum powder to the icing. 

You'd also want to use some Stork Bake on your mat and stick your icing (once on the sheet) into the freezer for a few minutes before cutting.
