Crinum macowanii (River Lily)

Crinum macowanii the River Lily, one of the most widely distributed Crinum species in South Africa. Large, trumpet-shaped, strongly fragrant flowers in shades of pink and white with a darker crimson stripe and a dark keel, black anthers, held on a sturdy stalk above bluish-green, strap-like leaves. Flower heads can carry up to 25 blooms at a time a genuinely spectacular sight in full bloom.

Full sun to light shade, in rich, well-drained soil with plenty of water through the growing season, kept dry over winter dormancy. Best left undisturbed once planted it forms large, long-lived clumps over the years. Frost tender, so give it a sheltered spot or container protection in areas with hard frost. Makes an excellent feature or focal plant, and does well near a pond or water feature.
