This is a darkly comic and beautifully crafted novel that tells the story of Gert Hardcastle, a thirty-something queer woman who works as a curator in a museum. Estranged from her mother, Jean, Gert believes she has found "the One" in Eva, a mysterious woman who serves coffee in the museum's cafeteria.

As Gert embarks on a poignant and often hilarious pursuit of Eva, she reflects on her eccentric childhood through vivid and surreal flashbacks. Her family includes her obsessive twin brother Frank, her father George who vanished to Africa to salvage the family crocodile farm, and her vain, neglectful mother Jean. The story is punctuated by terse letters from Jean and ambiguous encounters with Eva, as Gert struggles to come to terms with her past and find her place in the world.
