CROWN DEVON (1870-1980): The Crown Devon journey began in 1870 when Simon Fielding invested in the Railway Works on Sutherland Street, Stoke on Trent. They then began to produce the popular Majolica glazed pottery under the S. Fielding & Co backstamp. The Crown Devon backstamp started to appear on wares from around 1880, and in 1911 the Railway Works factory was renamed The Devon Pottery. From the early 1930s the Crown Devon mark - a crown over the words Crown Devon - became emblematic of the company, which sometimes appears without the Fielding name. A remarkable factory that carried on producing a vast range of wares and colours for over a hundred years, the factory unfortunately closed its doors in 1982 due to the gradual decline of the British pottery industry during the 1970s, along with the hit of the recession. Nearly 40 years later, the eclectic variety of their styles and wares are still incredibly sought after today and do very well at auction.
LADY HAMILTON PATTERN: Emma, Lady Hamilton (1765-1815), was a notorious figure in 18th-century England, and her namesake pattern from Crown Devon and other companies like Royal Albert reflects the elegant style of this bold adventuress. Famous both as the mistress of Vice Admiral Horatio Lord Nelson, the hero of the Battle of Trafalgar, and the artistic muse of English painter George Romney, Lady Hamilton influenced fashion in dress, home décor, and even dinner party menus in England during the Regency period.
