Throughout the life of the Church the crucifix has been an important devotional item for Catholics for these four reasons:

The mission of St. Josemaria Escriva was specifically spreading the call to Holiness for the laity. This refers to ordinary Catholics who work in the secular world and raise families.

Prayer before a Crucifix
Look down upon me, good and gentle Jesus,
while before Thy face I humbly kneel and,
with burning soul,
pray and beseech Thee
to fix deep in my heart lively sentiments
of faith, hope and charity;
true contrition for my sins,
and a firm purpose of amendment.
