On offer is this very interesting Crusader Coin, dating to James 1st of Cyprus.
James Ist of Cyprus (or Jacques I de Lusignan), 1334 – 1398, was Regent of Cyprus for his infant nephew Peter ( who was known as Peter II) from 1369. His half-brother Guy, titular Prince of Galilee was already dead as was his eldest brother, Peter 1st, who had reigned for ten years before being murdered. The Genoese had commercial and financial interests in Cyprus, and, on the invitation of Peter 1st’s wife, who hoped that this would avenge the murder of her husband, they invaded the island in 1373. They took over the fortified city of Famagusta, and killed the nobles who had been involved in Peter’s death. However, the Genoese then tried to take control of the island. James , as Regent of Cyprus, led the war against the Genoese. Eventually captured by the Genoese in 1374, he, and his wife were taken as hostages back to Genoa. Until he was released, the Kingdom of Cyprus was governed by 12 nobles. When Peter II died in 1382, James became, while still in prison in Genoa, King of Cyprus that year. James was also titular King of Armenia and titular King of Jerusalem 1382–1398. In 1385, James returned to Cyprus where he was crowned with great enthusiasm. After his crowning, his opponents were arrested and punished James was also titular King of Armenia and titular King of Jerusalem 1382–1398.
This is a genuine antique. Please remember the classification of an 'antique' is that it should be 100 years old, OR MORE. There are many articles being offered as 'antiques' when, clearly, they are not. Please note - I am NOT a numismatist, but, from my research, I believe this coin is dated and identified correctly. My apologies, if I am wrong.
