This original old antique steel engraved print originates from the Metropolitan Improvements of London in the nineteenth century - being a series of views of the new and most interesting objects in London and its vicinity. Published by Jones & Co., London in 1827.
THESE ENGRAVED PRINTS ARE BASED ON THE DESIGNS BY THOMAS H. SHEPHERD. THOMAS HOSMER SHEPHERD (1792 - 1864) WAS A ENGLISH WATERCOLOR ARTIST WELL KNOWN FOR HIS ARCHITECTURAL WORKS. Thomas was employed to illustrate architecture in London, and later Edinburgh, Bath and Bristol. His paintings were the basis for steel engravings in many books.

ANTIQUE ENGRAVING WITH ORIGINAL HAND COLOUR Engraving is the practice of incising a design onto a hard (usually steel or copper), usually flat surface by cutting grooves into it. The incised line or sunken area holds the ink. A dampened paper will usually be fed against the plate, covered by a blanket, so when pressed by rolling press it is squeezed into the plate's ink-filled grooves when the paper is lifted, revealing the paper and printed image. In the era before colour printing became common and cheap, antique prints were coloured by hand. They were generally coloured in factory like conditions usually by women or children on production lines, although the quality is often suprisingly good.
