CUMIN

CUMINUM CYMINUM

Cumin is a must in every herb garden, a lovely herbacious annual, with small slender branches.

Sow the seeds in early spring in a sunny, warm site, away from other plants that may crowd them.  Keep them well weeded.  Seeds may also be planted in small containers, and transplanted (See our Plastic Seedling Trays).  Keep the seedlings moist.  Cumin needs a warm climate for its seeds to set, and mature.  Prepare the soil carefully, so that it is medium rich, well drained and friable.  Add generous amounts of compost.  If the soil is very acid, give it a light sprinkling of dolomitic lime.  Keep the plants moist as they cannot store water owing to their fragile nature.

These plants make beautiful flowers that attract ladybird beetles, parasitoid wasps and many other benifical insects. They make great companion plants to your garden.

HARVESTING & DRYING:  When the fruit starts to turn yellow, cut the plants at ground level, place on drying trays, leave in a warm, airy room or shed to dry.  Once dry enough, rub the seeds from the seedheads and store in airtight glass jars. The flavour from your home grown seeds should be outstanding!

Cumin is said to stimulate the appetite, relieve flatulence, intestinal colic and aids digestion.

Germination test:  started on the 22 December 2021 on damp paper town.  98%+ after 10 days.
