Cut glass and silver plate Ink Well Circa 1880-1910 Ref. AUG46
You are looking at a very attractive, hand-cut, clear crystal glass inkwell with a solid cast silver-plated on brass lid.
Going by the simplicity of design, I suspect this would have been from the late Victorian period to early Edwardian period, maybe as late as the Art Nouveau period. It is a heavy piece, weighing 250 grams and is still in very good condition with no cracks, but, of course, there will be some very tiny nibbles on the edges. There are six flat, hand-cut faces around the circumference, and, one which acts as the base. The design on the lid shows a traditionally dressed Dutch girl and boy under a tree, with a windmill, ship and house in the background. The plating remains in good condition as does the hinge.
This is a very handsome piece indeed! Interesting to see that the lid is weighted by a material of a whitish composition - I haven't come across this before. Swirl marks are noticeable on the surface of the glass as well as bubbles.
The inkwell measures 7cm in diameter and stands 45cm high.
