RUSS BERRIE & CO USA: The founder of the Russ Teddy Bear was Russ Berrie who started the business in the 1960's and went on to become one of America's leading plush toy manufacturers. With headquarters in Oakland New Jersey USA he employed inhouse designers to research and come up with new designs. Later a few outside designers were asked to come up with some designs. One such designer was Carol-Lynn Rossel-Waugh who designed one of their most popular bears in the 1990's, "Gregory". His soft toys including his teddy bears were however produced firstly in China and later moving the manufacturing to other Asian countries. The decision not to manufacture their products themselves was due to the fact that Russell always believed that you should always play to your strengths and as he always said, he was a salesmen and manager designer and not a manufacturer. His success was partly due to the fact that he insisted that his plush toys be made to the highest standard using quality plush material. For hygiene reasons all of his plush toys were surface washable. His traditional teddy bears have always been a popular choice with teddy bear lovers throughout the world. Unfortunately, Russ Berrie died in 2002 and the Company ceased trading in 2011 but he is fondly remembered for his teddy bears which have started to become collectable items now.
