Arzberg was born in the year 1887, but they became an internationally recognized manufacturer in 1931 with the form 1382 designed by Hermann Gretsch. This shape impressed with its universal aesthetics of a modern but simplistic design.
Many renowned designers, following in the tradition of Hermann Gretsch and his successor Heinrich Loeffelhardt (Form 2000), continued to develop bestselling products with added aesthetic and functional value for consumers.
In 2013 the brand Arzberg was acquired by the Rosenthal Sambonet Group, which is curating the collections with a deep respect for their heritage, adding new chapters to the living history of one of Germany´s most renowned porcelain brands.

ARZBERG (1881-present): In 1881 porcelain turner Heinrich Schumann started his porcelain production in Arzberg Germany and after his death this was continued by his family. The brand ARZBERG was introduced in 1931 under directorship of Christoph Schumann and partnership with Dr Hermann Gretsch. After sale to Theodor Lehmann in 1892 porcelain production took place at Jakobs Castle in Arzberg, The factory had it's peak in the 1950s in East Germany, when it employed almost 1100 people. Rising competition meant the company got into financial trouble in the 1970s. In 1972 the company was taken over by Hutschenreuther. Since 2013 the Arzberg trademark is owned by Rosenthal Porcelain. Arzberg wares are characterised by modernist functional design with minimal decoration. It a partnership with Dr Hermann Gretsch, the organiser of the 1928 Berlin Exhibition of Good Design. In 1931, Arzberg released a white porcelain tea set, called the '1382', that Gretsch designed. Considered by some as the finest example of modernist teaware, the 1382 tea set has remained in production ever since. Also thanks to other designers like Heinrich Löffelhardt (Form 2000, 1954) the porcelain producer became a pioneer for functional porcelain for daily use.
