Cyrtanthus sanguineus Seeds

Cyrtanthus is the largest genus of Amaryllids in Africa consisting of 60 species. Fifty of these species are found in South Africa where they occupy a vast range of habitats, from arid lowlands to snowy mountains.

All Cyrtanthus need good drainage. Use clay pots or bed them out, in a soil containing a LOT of river sand. Never put them in peat-based compost (or similar), never use plastic pots. Most do not need much water.

Cyrtanthus sanguineus (Fire Lily) - This species is native to the Eastern Cape Province, coastal districts extending northwards through Natal to Tropical East Africa.

A large, 9 cm wide, trumpet shaped flower rises 25 cm above the strap shaped leaves. Brilliant orange-red blossoms droop down from clusters of umbels in summer. Foliage is rather sparse, only 2-4 leaves at any one time, measuring 35 cm long and 7 cm wide. Foliage emerges in spring from winter dormancy. Plant it in full sun to light shade while providing a quick draining soil. The common name, Fire Lily, refers to the ability of these bulbs to tolerate and even flower immediately after wildfires.
