About The New Kennels: Section ONE - These are companion animals, giving us so much unconditional love and loyalty, who feel pain, suffering and hunger just like we do. They deserve proper shelter, comfort, food and returned love from the people responsible for their well being.
There are many reasons for having such eloborate kennels. One is that they are completely soundproof, much to the neighbours relief. There are no wire Cages/fences to harm the animals and they are airy and sterile. In this world of violence we all need a bit of peace and this is what DARG is striving for.

A Little About Us
DARG is a pro-life, non-profit organisation that rescues, cares for and rehomes abused, neglected and abandoned cats and dogs. It is our vision to be a leading example of animal sheltering in South Africa.
How DARG came about
When DARG was founded in 1995 by Cicely Blumberg, Leslie McClaghlan and a group of caring volunteers, it was initially a shelterless rescue network. DARG eventually rented, at a very nominal fee, 28 dog kennels from a Mrs Harrop who ran a boarding kennel. For three years more and more dogs found their way to DARG, almost 3000 dogs were homed. Tragedy struck with the passing of Mrs Harrop, and the property was put up for sale. A search was on to find a donor who would buy the property and let DARG continue renting the kennels. It seemed impossible, but after much wishing, hoping and prayer the miracle occurred.
Early 2000, Mr Antonio with his wife, Joy, who was at that time one of the DARG directors, bought the kennels and land. This was put into a Trust, and can only be used for NO KILL animal shelters.
The Centre
The DARG centre houses cats in dormitories, surrounded by beautiful, tranquil, open gardens to the rear of the centre. Phase one of the new building will be finished at the end of November and houses the dog units arranged in an oblong. The constant scrub downs and water techniques will make sure of first class hygiene.
The buildings will be library-quiet and odour-free, demonstrating the advantages of using storefront-grade window glass instead of chain link wire to divide animal quarters, and using well-placed baffles. The design concept will resemble a "Shopping Mall" as much as possible, clean, quiet, comfortable, a place where neither animals, staff nor visitors feel stressed.
A separate entrance for surgery and special care cases will be catered for so animals will be least likely to become aware of the presence of stressed animals. Animals coming into the centre are strays or abused animals.
Our adoption policy will still be strict. The families and their homes will be carefully screened. The interaction between the parties will play a main part with the matchmakers, both inside the rooms that we will be setting aside for this purpose and out walking. We find this is a great way of bonding. Having this modern, unique and comfortable setting, we feel DARG will attract more and more prospective adopters. While also promoting what proper welfare of animals should be.
