Dahlias thrive beautifully in South African gardens when planted in spring, once the danger of frost has passed and soil temperatures have warmed to around 15°C or above. In most South African regions, this is typically from September to November, depending on local climate conditions.
Choose a sunny position receiving at least 6—8 hours of direct sunlight daily. For the biggest blooms and strongest stems, rich fertile soil with excellent drainage is essential.
Prepare your flower bed by loosening the soil to approximately 30cm deep, mixing in generous compost and a balanced granular fertiliser before planting.
Plant your dahlia clump with the growth points facing upwards, approximately 8—10cm below soil level. Firm the soil gently around the clump to remove air pockets and water thoroughly after planting.
For container growing, select a large pot with excellent drainage and use a premium potting mix enriched with compost.
Watering:
Avoid overwatering dormant clumps immediately after planting, as this can lead to rot. Water thoroughly once, then wait for visible growth before watering regularly.
Once established, water deeply once or twice per week, increasing frequency during hot spells or in sandy soils.
Feeding:
Dinnerplate dahlias are heavy feeders and perform best with consistent nutrition. Feed every 2—3 weeks with a liquid or water-soluble fertiliser during the growing season. Reduce feeding in late autumn to encourage healthy dormancy.
Staking:
A must for this variety. The enormous blooms and tall stems can become top-heavy, especially in windy areas, so sturdy staking is essential from early growth.
Deadheading:
Remove spent blooms promptly by cutting just above a leaf junction to encourage continuous flowering and maintain a tidy plant.
Cut Flowers:
An exceptional cut flower variety. The more blooms you harvest, the more the plant will continue producing throughout the season.
Overwintering in South Africa:
In milder South African climates, healthy clumps may remain in the ground if drainage is excellent. In colder regions with frost, lift and store after the foliage naturally dies back.
With its giant sunset-coloured blooms and unapologetically dramatic presence, Dahlia 'Bridgeview Aloha' is a showpiece variety guaranteed to turn heads in the garden and the vase.
