Dahlias are shipped as single tubers with a minimum of one eye guaranteed. If you are not able to plant the tubers upon arrival, store them in a cool, dry, dark location.
Plant dahlias after the last spring frost once the soil has warmed to at least 15°C. Choose a well-drained, nutrient-rich flower bed or planter. Loosen the soil to a depth of 30cm and incorporate compost along with an all-purpose granular fertiliser. Plant the tuber with the eye or sprout facing upward, positioning the top of the tuber approximately 8cm below the soil surface. Backfill, firm the soil to eliminate air pockets, and water thoroughly. For containers, ensure there is sufficient drainage.
Avoid overwatering newly planted tubers—this can cause rot. Water once at planting, then wait to water again until you see sprouts emerge.
Keep foliage dry to reduce the risk of disease. Water deeply once or twice a week, allowing the top 2.5cm of soil to dry out between waterings.
Feed with an organic water-soluble fertiliser every 3—4 weeks until March. Stop fertilising after that to encourage better overwintering.
Deadhead spent blooms regularly to encourage continued flowering. Cut just above a leaf node using clean, sharp garden scissors.
Cutting long stems for flower arrangements encourages branching and more flowers. Though their vase life is brief, dahlias are beautiful cut flowers.
Dahlias don't come true from seed. To maintain your favourite varieties, care for your tubers through the winter.
Tubers can be lifted after the first frost for winter storage. However, in most areas of South Africa, they can simply be left in the ground to rest until spring.
