Dala’s China Clay is not actually a clay at all, but it’s used in the ceramic industry to manufacture ‘chinaware’ (hence the name.) We use it as a neutral filler to create a smooth texture paste when added to our Gel Medium, or to our existing Texture Paste. It will produce a very white paste, an excellent base for enhancing the brilliance of Oil Paints or Glass Stains. Also, if you add ‘too much’ China Clay (or over saturate the mix) the new thickened paste will produce crack effects when it dries. China Clay is added to paint or gel medium for thickening, extending and to improve opacity amongst other things, without effecting colour. China Clay is a natural mineral powder. Can also be added in small doses as a matting agent to water & solvent varnishes.
