Dark Opal Basil is a striking, ornamental cultivar of sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum 'Purpurascens') known for its deep purple, almost black leaves and a flavour profile that includes notes of clove, anise, and ginger. It is widely used for both its visual appeal in gardens and its unique taste in the kitchen.
Flavour Profile and Culinary Uses
Dark Opal Basil offers a distinct flavour that is slightly spicier and more savoury than common green basil.
Flavour Notes: It features hints of clove, anise, and ginger, with a robust, aromatic scent.
Culinary Applications: Its high anthocyanin content makes it a natural food colouring, infusing oils and vinegars with a vibrant magenta hue.
Salads & Garnishes: The leaves add a dramatic colour contrast to fresh salads (like Caprese), tomato dishes, and as an edible garnish.
Pesto & Sauces: It can replace green basil in traditional recipes to make a unique purple pesto or enhance pasta sauces and stews.
Beverages: The leaves and edible pink flowers are used to make herbal teas, or added to drinks like lemonade and cocktails for flavour and colour.
Growing and Care
Dark Opal Basil is an annual herb that thrives in warm, sunny conditions.
Sunlight: Requires at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily to maintain its deep purple pigmentation. In shade, leaves may turn greener.
Soil: Prefers fertile, well-draining soil with consistent moisture. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist, watering when the top inch of soil feels dry. Watering in the morning is recommended to allow the foliage to dry, reducing fungal disease risk.
Maintenance: Regularly pinch off the growing tips once the plant reaches about 15 cm tall (6 inches) to encourage a bushier habit and prevent early flowering (bolting), which can make the leaves bitter.
