Robert Hart's story is woven into the early history of the then Cape Colony and particularly what is now known as the province of the Eastern Cape. He came to the Cape in 1795 as a private with Sir Hugh Popham's troops at the first taking of the Cape, remaining until his demise in 1867. He was already well established before the 1820 Settlers arrived, but nevertheless a bust of him stands inside the 1820 Settlers monument. This is the first biography of his life and achievements.
