This ground breaking musical first opened at the Baxter Theatre in 1987 and was originally seen by over 350 000 people. As 12 year olds, Jody Abrahams and Loukmaan Adams shared the role of Broertjie the newspaper vendor. Fifteen years later in 2002, they were cast as leads in a reworked production of Cape Town's favourite musical.
In the intervening years Kramer and Petersen wrote 5 other musicals, including Kat and the Kings, which won the Olivier Award for Best New Musical in London. In 2002 they turned their attention to a reworking of their first musical and it is this production, filmed after a record-breaking 7 month run at the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town, that is now available for the first time on DVD. The authors came to regard this as the definitive version of their first work together.
