About the Book
From the celebrated author of Citizens and The Embarrassment of Riches, Simon Schama turns his attention to the nature of history itself how it is made, told, and reimagined. Through two tales of death and aftermath, Schama intertwines fiction and fact, art and analysis: the demise of General James Wolfe at the Battle of Quebec, and the mysterious disappearance of George Parkman, a Harvard professor whose body parts were discovered in 1849.
By interlacing these episodes, Schama challenges historical certainty and exposes the porous boundary between knowledge and narrative between what we know and what we say we know. A haunting meditation on truth, identity, and the moral frailty of interpretation.
