A dark and atmospheric crime novel set in 1933 Breslau, a city now known as Wroclaw, Poland. The story begins with the gruesome discovery of a young aristocratic woman's mutilated body on a train. Her stomach is slashed open, and scorpions are found writhing insidea horrifying image that becomes central to the investigation.

Inspector Eberhard Mock is called in to solve the case and is assigned an assistant, Herbert Anwaldt, an orphan. As they delve deeper into the city's underbelly, they encounter a world of corruption, blackmail, and violence. The investigation leads them to perverted aristocrats, corrupt ministers, and secretive Freemasons.

The novel explores themes of ritual killing, with roots tracing back to the Crusades, and the dark, occult aspects of the case take a toll on Anwaldt's sanity. The oppressive atmosphere of Breslau, under the grip of the Gestapo, adds to the tension and danger faced by Mock and Anwaldt.

It's a compelling read for fans of historical crime fiction, offering a richly detailed and chilling portrayal of a city on the brink of chaos.
