The book explores the events surrounding the March 1944 massacre, in which 335 Italians, including 70 Jews, were executed by Nazi forces in retaliation for an attack on German soldiers. Katz's work sparked controversy, particularly regarding his claims about Pope Pius XII's role in the events, leading to a criminal-libel lawsuit in Italy. The book was later adapted into the 1973 film "Massacre in Rome", starring Richard Burton.
