HISTORICAL CONTEXT: While the sword was the primary knightly weapon, by the 12th century, battle axes gained popularity among the European nobility as a horseman's weapon. By the late 14th century, as swords were improved with better tempering and steel, the battle axe became a backup weapon for knights, though its effectiveness against advanced armor led to a resurgence in its use. Battle axes, especially the horseman's axe, were crucial in battles where knights faced heavily armored opponents. The weapon's ability to penetrate armor and deliver crushing blows made it a valuable tool. King Stephen of England used a battle axe after his sword broke at the Battle of Lincoln in 1141. Richard the Lionheart was also known to wield the weapon. The Battle Axe culture, emerging around 2800 BC, is associated with a migration of horse-riding people and the spread of Indo-European languages. Battle axes were also used in various parts of Asia, including Persia, India, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam. In essence, the battle axe, particularly the horseman's axe, was a powerful and versatile weapon that played a significant role in medieval warfare, evolving alongside armor technology and remaining relevant even as weaponry advanced.
