DEEP PURPLE  LARGE 17.0CT AMETHYST GEMSTONE WITH BEAUTIFUL CUSHION CUT

AN BEAUTIFUL LARGE 17 CARAT DEEP PURPLE AMETHYST GEMSTONE WITH A BEAUTIFUL CUSHION CUT. COMES WITH A BEAUTIFUL PERSPEX PRESENTATION CASE AND VELVET BAG.

THIS PARTICULAR STONE WAS BOUGHT FROM A SELLER IN THAILAND IN 2011 WITH THE COUNTRY OF ORIGEN NOT INDICATED BUT MOST PROPABLY BRAZIL. IT HAS A VVS (EYE CLEAR) CLARITY WHICH MEANS IT IS FREE OF INCLUSIONS AS SEEN WITH THE NAKED EYE WHICH IT APPEARS TO BE. IT WAS ALSO SOLD AS AN UNHEATED NATURAL GEMSTONE.

I THINK IT IS A REAL AMETHYST GEMSTONE AS IT PASSED ALL THE TESTS I COULD PERFORM:

PASSED THE SCRATCH TEST: IT SCRATCHES GLASS BUT NOT EASILY IT IS HARDER THAN GLASS.

(MOHS HARDNESS GLASS 5.5-6.5 AMETHYST QUARTZ 7.0-7.5)
PASSED THE ELECTRON UV LIGHT EMISSION TEST: NO REACTION AS IT SHOULD BE FOR AMETHYST. GLASS AND ALL QUARTZ VARIETIES DOES NOT SHOW A UV AFFECT.
(THE UV LIGHT HIT THE ELECTRONS. THEY JUMP AND FALL BACK. THEY RADIATE LIGHT OF A CERTAIN WAVELENGTH WHEN THEY DO WHICH IS SPECIFIC TO EACH ELEMENT IN THE MINERAL. THIS IS CALLED FLUORESCENCE. ONLY 10% OF GEMSTONES EXHIBIT A FLUORESCENCE AFFECT LIKE RUBIES, SAPPHIRE, TOPAZ, OPALS AND DIAMONDS. GLASS AND ALL NATURAL QUARTZ VARIETIES DOES NOT SHOW A UV AFFECT.)
PASSED THE THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY TEST: TESTED THE THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY WITH A MIZAR PRESTIGE SERIES 2 DIAMOND TESTER. IT MOVED UP THE LADDER A LITTLE FROM STANDARD LEVEL 3 TO LEVEL 4. FOR QUARTZ A LEVEL OF 4 IS THE NORM FOR THIS TESTER.
(WITH THIS TESTER GLASS MAKES NO MOVEMENT.)

SIZE: 16.5 x 16.4 x 9.9mm

DISCLAIMER: I AM NO GEMSTONE EXPERT. THESE GEMSTONES BELONGED TO A FAMILY MEMBER THAT HAS PASSED AWAY. HE COLLECTED GEMSTONES DURING THE EARLY TWENTY FIRST CENTURY MANY WERE BOUGHT ON EBAY AND OTHERS BY TRAVELLING TO OTHER COUNTRIES. I HAVE TRIED TO VERIFY AS FAR AS POSSIBLE ANY STATEMENTS OR CLAIMS BY DOING SOME RESEARCH ON EACH GEMSTONE.

AMETHYST:

In antiquity, the most valuable gems were known as the cardinal gems. They included Diamond, Emerald, Ruby, Sapphire and Amethyst. These were the gems most valued for their rarity. Amethyst no longer appears on this list. What happened? The answer is that extensive amethyst deposits were discovered in South America in the early 19th century, and Amethyst was no longer regarded as a rare gem.
Historically, fine Amethyst came from the Ural Mountains in Russia and in Germany. Both of these deposits are now exhausted. Very large deposits were discovered in southern Brazil in the early 19th century, with subsequent discoveries in nearby Uruguay. In the 1950's high quality amethyst was found in Zambia. The Zambian Amethyst has acquired the reputation as some of the finest in the world due to its unusually rich color.
Amethyst occurs in primary hues from a light pinkish violet color to a deep purple color. Many amethyst collectors search out the deepest purples they can find. But while the darker purples are highly prized, you will find they are not as sparkly as the slightly lighter stones.
For a gem which was once regarded as precious as Sapphire, Amethyst is very affordable, even at the higher grades. Most fine Amethyst is very clean and completely untreated and can be found in large sizes. It's quite a durable gem and is suitable for all kinds of jewelry.
Color is the most important factor for amethyst. The rich purple hue of Amethyst retains its allure, and gem collectors still seek out particularly fine specimens. Fine deep purple Amethyst is still fairly rare, though not especially expensive.
