DELFT WINDMILL PLATE HANDMADE IN HOLLAND WITH ARTIST SIGNATURE

THIS IS AN ORIGINAL DELFT BLUE PLATE MADE IN HOLLAND. ARTIST INITIAL SIGNATURE ON BACK. IT DEPICTS TYPICAL DUTCH SCENERY WITH A WINDMILL, OLD FARMHOUSE AND RIVER CANAL WITH SAILING BOAT. AND INTERESTINGLY VARIOUS GEESE FLOCKS FLYING AS SEEN ON SO MANY OF THESE DELFT PLATES.

Delft Pottery and the terms Delftware, Delft Blue or Delft Blauw refer to a specific decorative style that originated in the town of Delft in Holland. Potteries in the area made mostly simply-shaped earthenware vases, urns, plates or tiles date as far back as the early 16thC. Most Delftware are Blue & White designs and were in direct imitation to the widely popular Chinese imports to Europe of that era. Today the terms Delft Blauw refer to all similar blue and white pottery notwithstanding where it is made. Delft as a style is still quite popular these days.
