Royal poinciana, so named because it used to be in the genus Poinciana, is a flamboyant tree in flower - some say the world's most colourful tree. For several weeks in spring and summer it is covered with exuberant clusters of flame-red flowers. Even up close the individual flowers are striking. Royal poinciana is a fast growing tree. It is deciduous in climates that have a marked dry season. Even the leaves are elegant, lacy and fernlike.

Royal poinciana is a spectacular shade tree when planted in open ground. As a free standing specimen tree, it has no peers. Royal poinciana tolerates hard pruning and can e be kept at a small size, and even grown in the greenhouse.

Royal poinciana has shallow, wide-spreading roots that will not allow underplanting and the roots can be a threat to building foundations and sidewalks. This is all good for those who want to grow this magnificent tree as a Bonsai or a feature tree in a relatively large garden.
