Flowers

Dendrobiums are some of the easiest orchids to grow and bloom profusely without too much effort.

Position

Bright, diffused light is ideal with the container placed on a table or other surface. 50 - 60% Shade cloth can be used in a greenhouse, and on a balcony or window they should receive a few hours of morning sun. Too little sun results in dark green leaves and flowering will be greatly reduced.

Watering

The pseudobulbs of hard cane Dendrobiums store food and water. Watering might only be required once a day in some areas during the hottest parts of the day and not at all during periods of rain. Water only when it can be observed the media and roots on the surface are dry. A shrivelled cane or pseudobulb suggests the plant is not getting enough water.

Mounting and Potting

These are very forgiving plants. Water retaining media like LECA or Pumice together with Agricultural carbon is ideal. In drier areas coconut husk can be added liberally.

When selecting a pot choose a size which will accommodate some development of the plant although these orchids do bloom faster once they become pot bound. You can repot every 2 to 3 years, when the pseudobulbs grow from the container.

Feeding

Fertilize your Dendrobiums once a week with any good quality fertilizer to encourage orchid flowering. This should contain a high potassium content but also provide the micronutrients needed for the health of the plant. To apply, spray the roots and leaves liberally.
