NOTES	The world has had to wait for twenty-seven years for such a book as this, the brain of a romancer never held stranger experiences than fell to his lot. Colonel Reitz fought as a boy against the British, and this narrative of his experiences was written when he was in exile after the South African War. Thirty years later he commanded a British regiment in France. Thought by many to be one of the best narratives of the Boer War and a favourite book of king George VI, these exciting experiences of a young man make riveting reading. This is the first book of a trilogy of autobiographies by Deneys Reitz who was a protege of Jan Smuts and later in life held a ministerial position in both the Governments of Smuts and Hertzog.
