Description: Early Field/Student microscope, possibly French circa 1880-1900. Ref. MA24
Maker: No makers name but possibly of French origin. The box shows a back label stating Jac Couzij, Natuurk. Instrumenten, Zomerhof Straat, Rotterdam - -88 (I cannot make out the first two digits) with the price Guilden 6.75 which would equate to between 1 to 2 weeks wages for that time period.
Date: Difficult to date accurately but likely to be between 1880-1900
History: Appears to be based on the drum microscope from the 1840s. There were many drum type microscopes but the one offered is more refined. They were primarily used by the amateur naturalists as they were portable or by students. The cheaper drum microscope was made right into the early 1920s and is often seen advertised on E-bay.
Marks/Observations: All brass construction, the focus is a push and pull system, fitted with two object lenses which gives three different magnifications by unscrewing the one lens, one eye piece, and all in the original wooden box. The microscope is in working condition, the lenses are all in good condition as is the eyepiece. Some slight de-silvering on the mirror but this does not affect the ability of the microscope.
Dimensions: Height is 15.5 cm
Price: R1200.00
Shipping by courier only: R135.00
