This is a beautiful watercolour with ink outlines, signed by listed South African artist Desiree Monica Picton-Seymour and dated 1955.
The artist was born in London in 1923 and resided in South Africa from 1940.
She was a painter and graphic artist of buildings and the built environment. Studied at the Sutton and Cheam School of Art in England and at Michaelis School of Fine Art in Cape Town, under Professor Edward Roworth, where she was awarded the Macver Scholarship.
She illustrated and wrote a number of books and was also a lecturer at the School of Architecture, University of Cape Town. She participated in a number of art exhibitions and is represented in various South African galleries including the Africana Museum and the South African Cultural History Museum.
The watercolour is bright and unfaded and in excellent condition.
Original mount and frame show a bit of age. You would probably want to reframe this or at least remount in order to give it the showcase it deserves.
If you know where this house is, let me know. Looks to be an old Cape Georgian in rural Cape town, possiblly Stellenbosch or Graaff=Reinet.
