Dezso Koenig was born in Hungary in 1902 and emigrated to South Africa in 1931. After his training at the Hungarian Academy in Budapest he won a scholarship which allowed him to study further in Germany, France and Italy. He exhibited frequently in South Africa, as well as in New York, Paris, Milan, Israel and London, where he received glowing reviews. Dezso's paintings are in many of the important international and South African art collections.

He died in Johannesburg in 1972. His paintings are still sought after and sold at all major art auction houses including Stephan Welz and Bonhams in London.

Recently a painting by Deszo Koenig (very similar to this one) sold for in excess of R 25 000.00 at auction.
