Published by Tafelberg, 1983
Detailed and fascinating history of the diamond industry in Namibia from the earliest times to date of publication, with particular attention to the peculiar story of August Stauch. This humble but resourceful railwayman was the first to collect diamonds from the sands of Namibia and exploit the amazing potential they offered when they were literally sweeping them up! He later owned a valuable claim which survived the declaration of the Sperrgebiet by the German authorites. Eventually the First World War in effect forced his amalgmation with Anglo-American. For a long time he was one of the richest men in Namibia and invested a large part of his fortune back into the country. The Great Depression and diversification into tin and other projects brought him down and he was trapped in Germany during the war, dying there in 1947 in straightened circumstances with just 2.50 marks in his pocket.
