Dianthus barbatus or Sweet William as it is commonly known is native to Europe. It forms an attractive, 45cm dome of a myriad of beautiful flower colours. The brilliant little flowers have fringed petals of red, pink, purple or violet. The flowers are very sweetly scented. Sweet William is technically a biennial, but reseeds itself for flowers year after year, so it is a biennial which acts as a perennial by re-seeding itself. Shearing spent blossoms will encourage blooms for another year. The plant makes a nice cut flower with a vase life of 7 to 10 days and is easy to grow. It is attractive to bees, butterflies and birds and is one of the best, longest lasting cut flowers available.
